Scala 22/09/09. And it's only £11. Anyone up for it? Just bought my ticket and booked my train. ;D Unbelievably excited.
It was him or Micah P Hinson, who's also playing a one-off London gig next month. Hard choice, wish I could've done both but no way I can finance yet another gig / trip to London. I've got Josh Ritter and Duke and the King in September, 2 x Felice Brothers gigs in October, and Daniel Johnston in November. It's going to be the best Autumn ever. *happy face*

I'm demanding Katy is banned from this board, for bullying behaviour. Or something.

I didn't cos I realised that I'm going to Spain on Sunday and the gig is on Tuesday.....yet another spectacular failure of awareness by me!
I am still coming to Leeds though! By god I am.

I was waiting for someone to ask. It was a bit of a mixed bag actually. The band were amazing. After the support (Dawn Landes...meh), everyone was standing around waiting for Elvis Perkins to come on, and the lights fell but nothing happened right away. But then the horn section appeared randomly throughout the crowd and started making their way to the stage whilst playing the intro for Gypsy Davy. Amazing. They played my new favourite track 'Weeping Mary' and that was the highlight for me. Dawn Landes (meh) and her band came back out at the end of the encore for a huge rousing 'Doomsday' which was my other highlight. Found this set list on another site but they missed out 'I'll be arriving', which they definitely played but I'm not sure where so I slipped it in randomly. It *was* somewhere towards the end though: Gypsy Davy Stay Zombie Stay Stop Drop Rock And Roll Weeping Mary Slow Doomsday I Heard Your Voice In Dresden Chains, Chains, Chains Emile's Vietnam In The Sky All The Night Without Love Hey While You Were Sleeping I'll be arriving The Night & The Liquor May Day Encore: Sleep Sandwich Shampoo Doomsday So aye the band couldn't have been better, but the fucking sound though! Is Scala always that bad? It was singularly the worst sound I've ever heard at a 'proper' gig. Nowhere near loud enough, feedback, stuff cutting out, etc. I was 3 rows from the front and could hear what my friend was saying to me in his normal speaking voice during 'I'll be arriving'. Which was NOT what I wanted. It was so, so frustrating. They'd a lot of hecklers, particularly at the start when you couldn't hear the vocals at all. Don't reckon it was the sound guy's fault, but he got a lot of abuse. Nothing worse than a too-quiet gig when it just really has to be loud. I was for decking someone. So aye, mixed bag. If the sound had been right it'd have been incredible. As it was, it was just pretty great. Bit disappointing but glad I went all the same. He's got a real charisma about him, which you'd guess I suppose but it was good to see.

Yeah the Scala is a bit dodgy for sound I think. Although bellx1 weren't too bad there. Argh The Duke & The King are playing there in November hope to fuck they sort the sound out for that (must buy me a ticket).
Sounds like a good gig though, love the walking through the crowd thing. I'm From Barcelona did that at their gig at Favela Chic.

They're playing manchester the day before too. Hmm. Not sure I could persuade anyone to make the trip to manc with me so might risk scala again. Will think. Can't see that selling out too fast. Simone is on radio 3 at 915 tonight by the way, doing a couple of songs and talking about his new book.

Will have a think. Really didn't like Scala. No idea what the Ruby Lounge is like, but it can't be any worse.
Not surprised you're excited. Leeds! Land of the, er, Leeds people.

Did you catch that radio interview last night Kez? (sorry, talking about The Duke and the King on an Elvis Perkins thread). I'm a little bit in love with Simone Felice I think. He did a really nice solo version of 'One more American song' and read some bits from his new book, which actually sounded great. It's about a soldier who comes home wounded from Iraq, who was serving with loads of black guys who nicknamed him Black Jesus, on account of his being so pale and coming from a town called Bethlehem 2. He's clearly barking fucking mad. My kind of guy.

lol!
I missed it! Shite. He does sound like an interesting guy. Saw their performace on Jools. Was alright but I think it was a a shame they didn't have a full band thing going on. That would've been more suited to an encore or summink. Never mind.

Yeah it was a bit of a strange choice, for sure. Great performance though.
Still deliberating between Manchester and London. Hmm. Hope it doesn't sell out because I can't afford to buy tickets for anything until the end of the month. Can't see it, but who knows with these things.
Elvis Perkins has an EP out now too, which will also have to wait. And Micah P Hinson has a new album out *sob* It's torture, but my new guitar was worth it. New music will have to wait.

Well if you're thinking of London I'm sure I could buy one for you. If you decide you can't go I can always get rid of it.
Get someone to invite you to Spotify Katy. Changed me life so it did. I don't have any invites for some stoopid reason but if you know someone who can invite you it is fantastic.

I've got Spotify. Do I look like the kind of person who wouldn't have Spotify? It's good yeah, but it's too frustrating not being able to download from there. My laptop's speakers are shite. I'd rather wait to be honest. Cheers, but it's more the trains and stuff I have to ponder on. It'd be way cheaper and easier going to Manchester. Of course, ideally I'd love to do both... Need to work out of it's feasible. It's very good of them to play on a weekend though eh.
