I subscribe to PASTE www.pastemagazine.com whcih I love, and it comes with a free cd sampler every month, usually around 20 songs, some artists you've heard of, some you've not. It's witty and full of great reviews. They cover a few indie movies and toss in a couple book reviews as well. What else is good out there?

Mojo and Uncut monthly. Hot Press fortnightly. And the Observer Music Magazine supplement which comes with the Observer once a month.
All excellent reads. Although Uncut and Mojo disappear up their own arses occassionally.

The Word is pretty much the pick of the bunch for me at the moment though I usually get Uncut as well and it's generally good.
Mojo occasionally depending on who the cover artist is, Q very rarely since it's total shite. Hot Press now and again, though I was a subscriber for years and got fed up. Rolling Stone occasionally - again depends on who's on the front.

I get Rolling Stone because Ticketmaster gave me a free subscription last year, and I paid to continue it since they do have some good articles on politics. Paste also - though I think they should go back to quarterly, it seems each issue now is so skinny. I read an issue of Spin recently in the waiting room while my car was being repaired - not too bad, though I don't think I'd pay for it.

I used to buy Q without fail, but it,s total shite now. They focus on half a dozen bands(Led Zep,Coldplay,Oasis,K chiefs,A monkeys and one other depending on the season!)There is a hell of a lot of music out there, but you wouldn,t think so reading Q.

had my first flick through the word today. some excellent writing (e.g. nick cave feature) and a few satisfying and refreshing features. moby is in there talking more sense in half a page than the 400 epic tomes of incomprehensible banalities bono spouts daily.

yeah Word was the only mag I'd buy a while ago but I have stopped buying it now. They tend to focus too much on bands or artists from the 60s and 70s which irritates me.
They do love Tom McRae though, so I'll let them off.

Know what you mean, tc. I think Uncut and Mojo are worse for that, though. I gave up on the latter a while ago, as it takes itself way too seriously and Uncut's slowly going the way of Q.
Mick and Keef on the front cover of both this month, for God's sake.....though, admittedly, I'd probably by anything with The Beatles on the cover....
Still like The Word, though. Takes me a good while to leaf through it and digest it, which is a good sign....I think.

it used to be better but it's still better than most of the dross out there, that's for sure.

I never read any. In fact, I think the last music publication I bought was probably Melody Maker in about 1990.

*shakes fist at Michael*
I like Q.
...But then I'm a giant Oasis fan, so I would, wouldn't I? Sad;y, it's $8-$9 an issue here (works out to about $7 an issue were I to subscribe), so I don't often have the money for it. If there's a CD attached, I'm more likely.
Occasionally I'll have a look at Mojo or Uncut.... Filter isn't bad. Haven't read Rolling Stone since high school (and they tend to hate everything I like anyway), and the writers at Spin I want to throw rocks at, but then it's been awhile since I read that too.
Actually, The New Yorker will occasionally do great profiles, whih I end up reading even if I'm only a little interested in whoever they're talking about.

Haha....yeah.....sorry, sara! Wouldn't have missed an issue of it at one stage but rarely bother now....unless U2 are on the cover or something, which admittedly is nearly as regular as Oasis, I guess....
Good to see The Word is out again. Just finished digesting last month's issue recently, so I look forward to getting me paws on this one.
