The first thing to pop into my head is Underworld's Born Slippy at the end of Trainspotting. I saw it for the first time at a late showing after the pub and just went "Wow..."
John Cale's 'Hallelujah' in Shrek.
I'll think of more, I'm sure.

Great shouts there. Isn't Lost in Translation good? Bit like Once in that the main protagonists part at the end yet ye know they're both going to be grand.

yes, i loved it. seems to be a love it or hate kinda show. and bill murray. well, he's made for those parts.
good choices folks, keep em coming.
joy divison's 'atmosphere' at the end of control is pretty gut wrenching, but then it would be.

madame george in breakfast on pluto as kitten clicks and clacks her way along the pavement. that entire soundtrack is brilliantly applied.

Great choice marg, love that film. Have to admit I didn't get Lost in Translation at all though.
There's some great songs in Shane Meadows' Dead Man's Shoes. He knows how to use good music to full effect, that guy. The soundtrack's well worth investing in.

Aye, Control had me on a downer for some days thereafter.
Comforably Numb (the Roger Waters and Van Morrison version) in The Departed....which itself was then used to great effect in the last series of The Sopranos when Christopher sticks the movie soundtrack on in the car.

yes, shane meadows has a knack for a menacing use of music.
smashing pumpkins' 1979 at the start of 'on the edge' with cillian murphy hovering over the pew. quickly followed by 'start' from the jam as he zips through the neon lit dublin streets in a stolen jamjar, to the frames' 'seven day mile' when hope interjects with a chink of what possiblity might look like. actually, again that entire soundtrack is a gem. an underrated and overlooked early outing from john carney of once fame. original pairing of murphy and stephen rea together in a convincing tale of balancing transient teen despair with the urge for self-destruction.

and it has one of my favourite film lines of all time. about hope and gaining purpose outside of yourself. 'you wanna know the truth? if it's a matter of life and death between people like you and me, then i want to outlive you. and i want to see what happens to you. 'cause i like ya'. aww. er anyway *resumes hard bastard pose* next...

The whole Donnie Darko soundtrack is brilliant. Especially the scene with 'Head Over Heels' that starts with him getting out of the school bus and then walking through the corridors.. brilliant.
