Just bought this month's Uncut, the one with George harrison on the cover.
Have always been a Beatles fan, they were the first records I ever heard (me and my friend used to try and draw the Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds picture). They're one of those bands you don't ever readily admit to loving because I find people dismiss them all too easily and you feel like if you admit liking them you're a sort of a lazy music listener, if that makes sense.
They're the first band a lot of people list in their music loves but they're also a band that I don't think people really think about. For me, they have shaped my music tastesall my life I think. While I love all out rock music, I find most of the time I'm drawn to more folky chilled out music and I think The Beatles represented both.
Anyway enough of that, there's a very interesting article on George Harrison. Probably my favourite Beatle in terms of the fact that he was the most quiet but all in all the most talented. It seemed like he wanted so badly to play music but hated all the attention. I loved that when he split with The Beatles he bought a huge sprawling mansion and just worked on his garden.
I think it's difficult to find new things to write about when it comes to the Beatles but this is a nice insight to a very down to earth bloke from Liverpool who happened to become extremely famous. The most moving part is Paul McCartney talking about George and his last meeting with him, I found myself crying proper tears as I read the last few sentences.
Worth getting I think. Uncut is a great read. I always marvel at how every issue completely reflects what I thought was my quite diverse music taste...
