Saw him on Friday in Dublin and, man, he's still in fine voice.
Played a really good set opening up with I'm a Man and had a pretty good band backing him albeit he was a bit generous giving them all their solos. Bongos are grand. A bit of saxamaphone adds to the sound. But there's such a thing as overdoing it.
But, he was a bit of a wizard on the ol' Hammond organ although a dab hand with the guitar as well. Some great playing on Dear Mr Fantasy from his Traffic years and Can't Find My Way Home from his time with Blind Faith. Both highlights.
Closed the set with Gimme Some Lovin, of course. Higher Love got a run out too for you kids of the 80s. No Valerie, though. Denied!
First time in ages I've really heard a crowd shout for "more" at the end with so much vigour. Most times people just play along with the choreographed "we'll go off now and come back on if you really want us and play the three songs we've decided to spontaneously play" but this was a genuine case of the punters demanding more.
It wasn't to be, though. The venue had a DJ coming on at 11. Rock 'n' roll, eh? Fuckers. I hate that. Would it have killed them to allow him one more tune?
Anyway, not a bad night for all that.

Lovely review michael. Did you get the latest Uncut with Bob on the front? Big spread about Traffic and Winwood too, sounds like there was a few ructions in the band but I loved the fact they packed up all their gear for a few months and fecked off to the country and just played music and partied incessantly. That's the life!

Oh. No, I must get it, Kez. Saw Bob on the cover and reckoned I'd sorta read enough Dylan cover stories over the years but wouldn't mind learning more about Traffic. Anything I've heard of them has been good.
Thanks for the heads-up.
