Just saw a snippet of him on the tellybox performing in Nashville with his wife and Emmylou Harris and thought it was lovely. Have forever dipped in and out of his back catalogue but never really listened to an album completely.
My brother used to play Decade a lot and I love the version of Helpless on The Last Waltz but just wondering what's a good album to start with?

Probably After the Goldrush, Kez. Up there with his best and a good mix of the coutryish ballads and some good rockin too. Harvest is along similar lines and Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere is well worth your while too.

Cheers for that michael. Was in HMV yesterday and I couldn't for the life of me think what to buy and I hate that. Next time I'm there I'll look out a coupla Neil Youngs so.

...and there's countryish ballads as well as the coutryish ballads I mentioned earlier. Um. Yeah, Neil Young's little-known and under-appreciated coutry phase...oops.

What Michael said - those are three of my all-time favorite albums.
Living With War is interesting also - not his very best musically, but I love that he was so furious about the actions of the Bush administration a couple of years ago that he went into the studio and snarled out an album and slapped it up on the web asap just to get it out where it could be heard.

I'd recommend the Live At Massey Hall album. Solo gig, absolutely brilliant. Or any of the ones Michael mentioned.

Yeah, definitely Live at Massey Hall. Or try and get hold of a dvd of his BBC concert from the early '70s. Most excellent.

Oh that's on BBC4 on 31st October, Katy, as part of a Neil Young night. Can't wait! Never seen that concert in full. Needless to say I'll be hovering over the record button.
There's an interview with him on as well plus the CSNY documentary he put out recently, "Deja Vu".
I see he's got another live album from his archives coming out soon as well.

Aha, I forgot there were a lot of Neil Youngies (is that the right word) on this board. thanks for that people. I will defintitely look some out. The Live at The Massey Hall album I've heard a lot about too might invest in a copy of that.

Oh that's on BBC4 on 31st October, Katy, as part of a Neil Young night. Can't wait! Never seen that concert in full. Is it really? Brilliant. I have a knackered old VHS copy I've had for years and years, which is now virtually unwatchable (and not helped by the fact I don't have a VHS player). Can't wait to see it again. Yeah go for Massey Hall kez.

I'm quite partial to Mirrorball, myself. I quite like the 'recorded as live element, and the fact that his backing band is Pearl Jam is fairly cool. The track I'm The Ocean is one I used to play in a band, about 10-11 years ago.
