Cheers, Kez. Picked it up there. I'll give it a spin on the way home.

Yeah what kez said, Michael. Give it a few listens. My first reaction wasn't good. It's kind of different from his previous stuff and wasn't quite what I expected.
To compare it to his other work I'd say it's like a cross between Cold Roses and Easy Tiger, but more accomplished than Easy Tiger, and less chaotic than Cold Roses. With the woozy introspection of Love is Hell, the overall vibe of Heartbreaker, the odd smattering of Rock 'n' Roll, and a dash of 29's dark edge.
Read a recent interview where he said he had a vision of the Cardinals becoming more huge rock stadium, like Oasis and the Foo Fighters. If that happens, I'll have him shot.

God, can ye imagine? Back slowly away from the stadium, Ryan. Sloooowly. That's it. Fuckin HMV wrapped the disc in several metres of sticky tape, it would seem. Why?! Why would someone do that? Now I've got a sticky album cover. And I paid an extra £1 for the privilege. Back to play.com I'm going in future, I tells ya.

Obviously playing with the Gallaghers has had an adverse effect on him. You would've thought Noel getting ninja'd by a crazed fan would have put him off that lark.
Maybe the person who sold you the CD wasn't a Ryan fan. "Let's see him get this cd wrapper off muhahahahaa"

Maybe so, Kez. It's weird, though. HMV's basically a DVD shop now doing a sideline in CDs.
It's mad. I was thinking too of at least three other decent music shops in Belfast that have closed in the last few years. I'm sure most towns are the same. Strange days, indeed.

I noticed that in the HMV here as well. Its a smallish one but the CDs were all down the back, crammed into two rows, without the usual artist indicator separator things, just a long line all in alphabetical order, sort of like how people file their own CD collection at home.
But yeah it was mostly cheap DVDs and computer games.

Yeah, gave it a spin on the way home and twice again at home.
It's pretty good. Very.....well....Ryan Adams. Maybe he just hasn't ventured too far out of his comfort zone. Then again, he's good at what he does, so why complain?
I'm liking Go Easy and Let Us Down Easy. I found Slow a bit melodramatic but it might grow on me. He's got the voice-cracking thing perfected at this stage.
The band are definitely good for him, reining him in where it could all get a bit self-indulgent and balancing out the melancholy with a guitar part here and a drum fill there.
Definitely enough, though, to make me go back and listen again and I suppose that's the sign of a good album - that you don't get it first time but there's something there that makes you want to give it a chance.

You mean Stop? Took me a few listens to get into that, sounded like the obligatory piano ballad to start with.

Haha...yeah. Sorry. Stop is the one indeed. Getting the title mixed up with the tempo....!

Ah, I liked Stop straight away. I think it was appealing to my hungover feeling sorry for myself emotions.
It is a grower though isn't it? They're the albums that always last the longest I think. I just know when I go to see them live I just know there'll be a couple of songs from the album played on the night that will make me want to go back and listen to it again. That is if they're playing a lot of stuff from the new album, which I think they probably will.

Gawd I do hope so kez. I can't be doing with any of that Easy Listening Tiger nonsense live. I want a 2 hour set, mainly with songs from JCN and Cold Roses, with long-winded metal jam versions of stuff off the new album and a couple of solo piano songs for an encore. I don't think that would be too much to ask would it?

Is it wrong that I was quite fond of Easy Tiger? I love Cold Roses too. I really couldn't get into Jacksonville City Nights all, and I will definitely have to give 29 another listen cos that kinda passed me by as well. I would like a rocky set though cos I enjoyed that when he did that in Cork, it was fascinating to watch. It wasn't like a gig where you jumped about and mouthed along to the words which I think pissed a few people off but I loved it. Just great to see him interacting so well with the band and not completely off his head.

Yeah saw that earlier. Ouch, basically. But as you say, some valid points. I kind of like the navel gazing tho', he wouldn't be Ryan Adams without it.

Oooh its a bit harsh I think.
I quite like the self pitying misery thing actually and I always accept that a lot of people won't get him because of that. He's not an artist I ever really try to push on people (except maybe to recommend them Heatbreaker or Cold Roses) cos I think his stuff really isn't to everyone's tastes. I kind of like that though.
Actually the review all in all is quite complimentary apart from the Cobwebs and Magick bashing and I think I can take on the criticisms he makes about it as a whole, but then a lot of what he says is stuff we know already. Maybe its one of those "album for the die-hard fans".
I actually quite like Magick, in that jump about the bedroom and but not take too seriously kinda way. Which I sort of think was the point maybe? That's what I hear when I listen to it anyway.
But like I say it's a very good review because it is written by someone who knows his Ryan Adams but wouldn't put me off it at all cos like I say I sort of know all that already.

Blimey, it's like my subconscious took itself off while I was sleeping and wrote a review. Maybe I'm Tyler Durden? Now I'm confused.

The thing about Ryan Adams is he always manages to leave a big bulk of his fans dissatisfied. First time I saw him live was at a sit-down theatre where he was playing solo. He was absolutely wankered and barely coherent, and by the interval well over half the audience had walked out and the rest were mesmerised.
If you read his message board (the evil one) everyone has a different opinion of what was great, what was shit, what he should sound like next, which songs he shouldn't have bothered writing, which genre he should stick to, etc etc. And these are his die-hard fans. Critics are even more divided.
In a few years time, these Cardinals albums will be remembered as just another genre the man passed through, and people will either be relieved he's moved on from it or wish he'd go back to it. Like Whiskeytown and all his other phases. He's got a touch of genius about him though, so it'll always be interesting seeing what he throws out there next even if we're not really getting it every time.

I think that's it though, his albums are always worth a listen because he is immensely talented - even the reviewer concedes that - and he is well able to make a fantastic album.
Its funny about split audiencess, I played my dad Magnolia Mountain off Cold Roses and he loved it but then I played him some songs off Gold and he didn't get it at all.
I stil llike Cardinology a lot though. It will certainly be on heavy rotation for a good while.

Nice one kez. Sounds great, despite the dodgy attire and Casal's slightly flat top e. What's with that man's hair as well? If he sorted it out he'd be way less irritating.
