You've changed your tune. I still stand by my initial assessment.

You'll change your mind too. Tenner says so. Favourite tracks at the moment are 'crossed out name' and 'sink ships'. I love it I do.

It's really not worth the effort. Would have made a good EP.

Nonsense, there are far too many good tracks on there for an ep. In fact, there are only two weakish ones on the album, which is damned good for Mr. A.

I'm not without the odd gripe though. The songs are just all too damned short for one thing. Hopefully this'll right itself live though, can't wait for the 13th.

I think going on past musical judgements I'll probably end up agreeing with Katy. Was downloading it last night from my upstairs neigbours robbed internet (just until we get our own!) so hopefully I'll get a listen by tonight sometime.

I think going on past musical judgements I'll probably end up agreeing with Katy. Of course you will. I'm right. Depends on which of Ryan Adams's many guises you're into though I guess. For me, it's all about 2005. If you take Easy Tiger as being his departure from addiction, and therefore something of a 'new start' musically (as I do), and then discount it completely as a practise session, and pretend Cardinology was the next album after the 2005 ones, you're about there. There is a whiff of Easy Tiger about it - the short catchy songs, the slightly bland drums, etc. But it's just got way, way more depth to it. Lyrically, in places, it's stunning. And the production is, in the most part, faultless. The songs themselves are some of the best he's written, and certainly the best he's written since he's been sober. There are a lot of echoes of the past on there, but it's all very new too. There's a touch of Gold I suppose, as there's quite a few upbeat catchy songs. Big touch of Cold Roses too, and a smidgen of JCN (but it's his least country sounding album in years I'd say). If I had to compare it to any of his past stuff, I'd say it was most similar to Heartbreaker, vibe wise. It has a deep feeling of sadness running through it. I love it when Ryan gets depressed (sorry Ryan). It's reflective sad, rather than crazy sad like 29 was, or indulgent sad like JCN was, or wannabe, like RnR. It sounds grown-up. And whatever anyone says, I love Neal Casal's backing vocals, and his imput in general. They obviously have a real connection. I think he reigns Ryan in a little and gives the songs some direction. Perhaps a little 'formula', which to be honest I'm surprised in a way to find myself approving of. But it works so well. And it's a grower, and I do love a grower. I thought it was shit on the first hearing, now I really like it. I'm not saying it's my favourite thing he's ever done. I'd stick it probably 5th after the 2005 ones and Heartbreaker. But it's everything Easy Tiger wasn't. It's along the same lines I guess, but it's got real soul to it, infinitely better lyrics and a proper real honed sound, which hopefully now they've grasped it, the cardinals will just continue to make their own, grow and get better and better. Got to say, I've never looked forward to a Ryan Adams gig quite this much.

Excellent review Katy, its sounding pretty good to me!
I think if anything he's unpredictable but I like that as I think he's best when he mixes his styles up and doesn't stick to one forumla and I agree about Neal Casal - last time seeing him live they definitely seem to have a great connection and it only makes him a better performer and songwriter too by the sounds of it.
Really looking forward to the gig and to the album! So tempted to head over to Dublin now....

Yeah, Stop is a great track. I love the line "for some of us the glass is filled with lights, but if the honey makes you sick honey there is the line."
I really like Sink Ships, particularly the last 1/3 or so of the song when the church bell sounding piano comes in, and for the "like birds inside a bell" imagery.
Crossed Out Name, especially the moment when the synth kicks in, and the opening line "Orange sky don't go." For some reason.
What do you make of Majick? I love it. And Cobwebs, which I imagine will sound great live.
The only tracks I'm not mad about are the second one and the second to last one. Evergreen made me snigger a bit at first but I really like it now.

Sink Like Ships is great, love that actually.
Majick I like a lot actually, very rawk! Nice to hear some rock out stuff on this album, the band just sound fantastic I think, they're songs definitely written for a band. I guess Stop is the exception but it just sits beautifully at the end.
It is definitely an album where you can't wait to hear the songs live. Probably the first time in a while I'll be going into a gig hoping to hear a lot of the new stuff.

Love seeing how the songs took shape. The 'video' to Cobwebs is quality.

Ah that performance is from Other Voices. I remember when that was being recorded and I very nearly jumped in my car and drove down to Dingle to try and blag a ticket but of course I didn't

Yeah, that Other Voices set was brilliant. Hard to believe, though, that was all they did. Maybe more will emerge some time.
Must try and duck out and get the new album today and listen on the commute home. Sounds good from what yis are saying.

I think you'll like it michael, I think on very very first listen its a bit like "ok not sure about this" but then the songs kind of settle in nicely.
Like Katy said lyrically in places it is outstanding, some mad imagery in there like the above mentioned "bird inside a bell" line. It does prove that the depressed songwriters do write brilliant songs and to hear his voice breaking on Stop is really quite moving.
Sink Ships is going round my head this morning actually. I found even on 2 or 3 listens I knew there was something there and I was going to like it but it hadn't quite hit me yet but now they're definitely making an impact.
It would be hard to match it to an album but yeah Cold Roses would be close and maybe the rock outness of Gold but without the obvious Top 20 hits running through it, its better musically than that I think and that's down to The Cardinals no doubt.
