Adele - 21 Anna Calvi - Anna Calvi Elbow - Build A Rocket Boys! Everything Everything - Man Alive Ghostpoet - Peanut Butter Blues and Melancholy Jam Gwilym Simcock - Good Days At Schloss Elmau James Blake - James Blake Katy B - On A Mission King Creosote & Jon Hopkins - Diamond Mine Metronomy - The English Riviera PJ Harvey - Let England Shake Tinie Tempah - Disc-Overy www.mercuryprize.com/aoty/news.phpHaving just bought the King Creosote/Jon Hopkins one I can highly, highly recommend it. Beautiful little album that. Have loved a fair few of King Creosote's previous efforts and was afraid this nomination might be an attempt to give him credit for his previous work to compensate for no previous nominations but it does not disappoint. Can't really comment enough on the others as I haven't heard enough and never get the predictions right for this thing! Doesn't look like too bad a line up though...

Has to be PJ Harvey for me. Brilliant album, though admittedly I haven't heard most of these. Adele? Oh dear, perhaps best not to get me started...

Somehow I knew that comment was coming... I know she's EVERYWHERE, but I still think she's got an incredible voice and I love Rolling in the Deep.

Oh I know it's horses for courses and all that, I just don't get it at all. Her voice is like nails down a blackboard to me. In particular that 'someone like you' song. Oh MAN I hate that song so much. And it follows me everywhere. It's become a standing joke that everytime I walk into a shop or cafe or get in a cab or anything that fucking song comes on. It's a fairly sweet but incredibly boring song and she just shrieks it. And that's not to go into how horribly obnoxious she is. Saying she didn't think she should have to pay tax on her album because she's too famous to use public transport and all state schools are shit! But I won't go on.

Obviously entitled to your opinion I've seen her interviewed a lot and she is just very blunt and 'London'. Comes across a bit strong but I think she is probably a great person to know.

I love Adele love her voice love her songs agree she shouldn't really moan about paying tax but I still think she's fab. Haven't heard any of the other albums so can't comment on whether she should win or not, but I still hope she does. Katy your description of Adele pretty much matches my opinion of Katie Melua, feel your pain, Closest Thing to Crazy followed me around for a while as well *shoots self in head* TC did you see the interview where she said she went out with a poncho/kaftan thingy on and no knickers (heading to the off licence in the morning LOL, love that in itself) and a gust of wind came along...

I'm somewhere in the middle about her. I thought Chasing Pavements was appalling, total dross and thought she'd probably just got lucky on the back of the successes of Amy Winehouse and er....Duffy (who was pretty lucky herself to get any sort of success - still can't work that one out). This time round I think she seems to have matured a bit. Think the key about these types of acts is finding your own voice rather than being a retro rent a wig and making a video pretending you're in The Supremes (again - Duffy).
Howeverrrrr, I wouldn't run out and buy her album and I do think she tried to hard to be down to earth by the fact she goes on about it all the time. She really pushes the London thing a bit too much I think. Its like ok we get it you have a big soul voice and yet you're all cockerneeeee and down to earth innit.
But then I don't loathe her music, she's still pretty young she's written a couple of good songs and she seems to be finding her own voice a bit more. Couple of albums more and she might be a bit more interesting maybe.

I did see that interview, Deb. She's honest to a fault, huh I didn't get her the first time around but this album is a classic.

Well yeah, the tax thing was a stupid thing to say but she's young and naive I suppose. She probably wasn't aware of the implications of what she was saying.
I still don't get the voice though, I just don't get it at all, or the songs. It's a personal thing I guess though (I'm with you on Katie Melua, dwf... christ that bicycle song... just horrific) but I just think it's horrible. Whereas Winehouse had that deep soulful quality to her voice Adele's is just abrasive and shrill and screamy and that's about it. To my ears anyway. She comes over as that kind of a character as well, all big gob and no heart or soul.
Talking of pop brats, does anyone else want to pummel that curly-haired little cunt from One Direction's face in? All of them, obviously, but him first.

Dear God. Remember Whitney covering Dolly's 'I will always love you'? Beautiful, heartrending, quiet country ballad sung with immense feeling and sadness, covered by a woman with a powerful voice but absolutely no emotion or soul.
Well, that.

Adele singing country music! That should be a laugh. Earlier today I had a listen to Neil Young's "new" live country album, can only imagine her covering some of those songs. It's very twangy but he's clearly having a great old time.
I actually did buy 21 after liking Rolling In The Deep, but I agree with Katy the album overall is very shrill, I found myself wishing she'd bring the shouting down occasionally and just sing rather than overplaying it all.

Her voice is too big for country alright. I'm sure Lily Allen said recently she wanted to try country. What is wrong with people.

So Polly Jean won it. Well pleased for her.
Probably one of the most consistent artists of the last 20 years (can't believe she's been around for 20 years!).

I can see how her more recent stuff might not really appeal but definitely her earlier records are very, very good. Her first album Dry is pretty amazing. It always used to make me laugh with boys back in the day in indie clubs headbanging to Sheela-na-gig it's like "errrr do you know what it's about?!" Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea is pretty excellent too.
She kind of mixes it up a bit, gets quite experimental but she does some brilliant straight up rock songs as well. I think she's gained a bit of a reputation as a sort of eccentric kooky bird who lives in an attic playing a harp or something but really she has a great body of work. Something there for everyone really.

Agreed her early stuff was better.
Some of the dross they had on the list this year eh? I watched the full performances after, man, some of them were fucking properly shite. That piano twanging guy, was he a joke? And that awful serious wanker who did that 'atmospheric' shit with loops and stuff. I can't stand that. KT Tunstall did it, it was quite impressive, now everyone else please stop. I liked the King Creosote though, perhaps he should've won it. It'd have been nice to see it go to someone a bit less well-known.
I'm just happy Adele didn't win. Or Elbow. God, they're shit.

Yeah Kenny from King Creosote ha a bit of an epic dsicgraphy. He's recorded under a couple of different guises and with other people so it brings his total up to quite a bit.
KC Rules OK is a brilliant album, definitely recommend that. The Mercury album nominated is also very very good too. He sort of has his roots in folk but isn't twee and pretentious. Am going to see him on Friday night playing with Jon Hopkins. I'm kinda hoping the play the album in it's entirety as it's 6 songs that intersperse with each other and is so benefits from hearing it all in one go. Have seen him live a fair few times now and not a bad performance yet.
