Not keeping up with new music, me (not that I ever did, really), but have been listening to music a lot throughout the year. And it struck me that some of those albums have helped a lot. On low days, sleepless nights etc. Helps redirect one’s mind, if you know what I mean. Here’s my list for 2011: * Joe Purdy – '4th. of July' / 'This American' – and re-listening to all the old albums * Lisa Hannigan – 'Sea Sew' / 'Passenger' * Xavier Rudd – 'Koonyum Sun' * Herbie Hancock – 'The Imagine Project' / 'Possibilities' / 'River: The Joni Letters' * Ry Cooder – 'The Ry Cooder Anthology' * Jean Jacques Milteau – 'Bue 3rd' / 'Fragile' / 'Memphis' * Josh Ritter – 'So Runs The World Away' * Bob Dylan – 'Oh Mercy' – and then to some of the really old&golden ones - which led me to listening through a ton of Dylan covers and then creating my personal “Sings Dylan” playlist. Which I may say, in all modesty, is brilliant. Practising this updated version of my youth’s mixed tapes introduced me to some new (for me) artists, such as * Tea Leaf Green – 'Raise Up The Tent' * Coffee Bean Brown (Tea Leaf Green going acoustic) – 'Coffee Bean Brown Comes Alive' * (Tom Landa and) The Paperboys – 'The Road To Ellenside' * Bill Morrissey – 'Come Running' And this autumn I finally found my way to * The Decemberists – 'The King Is Dead' / 'Long Live The King' And all along a lot of this wonderful mr. Purdy, I must admit. Of course I also like beards and soft voices. So much comfort to be found in music, isn’t there. Anyone else?

Ahhh good to see a bit of Ry Cooder in there birch. Love Borderline and Boomer's Story. Haven't heard many of his more recent albums though.
A favourite of mine was King Creosote and Jon Hopkins' collaboration Diamond Mine released earlier this year. A mini album really, reminded me a little of the way David Kitt's early albums where the songs were all interwoven. It opens with some piano chords and a backing track of people in a pub and it is really lovely. Definitely a nice wintery, sitting on the train kinda album.
Also liked Laura Marling's new one although I did have to go and see her live for the songs to grow on me but I often think that gives songs a bit more longetivity when it takes a while for them to get inside your head.
Both albums for those nice reflective moments. Haven't had anything like the year you must have had birch so can't proclaim any serious problems or difficulties but both nice little 'take a moment and chill out' albums.

I'm so glad you love Joe Purdy, Birch! He's so sweet, when he came to Atlanta he put me on the guest list. He asked the security guard to get a couple of bar stools for me and my friend. We were the only people with barstools to sit on! After the show, we hung out in the dressing room with him for at least a half hour. Maybe longer! He was sitting next to me and had his arm protectively around me, it was so nice! Josh Ritter came to Atlanta recently too, I got on the guest list but could not weasel my way backstage ! We waited for him outside in the cold with around 50 other people. He saw me first and ran over and gave me a hug! He signed 2 CDs I got for my sister and her husband, and he signed the book, he hugged me some more. Then he signed Sarah's book ( she's my new gig buddy from the Frames board, but now she's back in Ireland ! Oh well, it was fun while it lasted, sniffle!), then he hugged Sarah, then he hugged me again, and we finally said good bye! I felt so good after that! The good feelings lasted at least 24 hours! Ok now to answer your question, what music has helped me get through the year? Dandelion Wine, # 1 in my iPod playlist rotation. Not just because they asked me to be their manager, which made me supremeley happy, and I know it will sound corny but it improved my will to live! But the songs are so great, too! Go have a listen and tell me if you agree: www.myspace.com/dandelionewine1 is their page. So far I've been e-mailing their CDs to music supervisors in films and emailing people like David Dye, he was one of the first important DJs in this country to play the Frames. Of course I mentioned the Frames on my email to him, and told him i have been a fan of theirs since 1997, yada yada yada. Also I have been listening to all of my Michael Brunnock tunes over and over,I never get tired of him! That reminds me there are a couple of his new songs on iTunes, I must download them! They will be on his new cd called the orchard which will come out after the Sean Penn movie comes out because some of the songs will be on the soundtrack and I told him he can't release the cd until after the movie opens in order to not mess up his chances of getting an Oscar nomination! I remember when the swell season had that problem with Falling Slowly, the big bullies at Disney were trying to get them disqualified because the song had come out before the movie.Dickheeads! So, my list is Joe purdy, Josh Ritter, dandelion wine, and Michael brunnock!

I have been trying to get into Italian music more. Some of my favorites right now are:
Jovanotti- he is kind of pop, but has some great, catchy songs with really happy, love-ish lyrics. I love Baciami Ancora, A Te, La Notte die Desideri
Vasco Rossi- he is more rock with a deep, rough voice. Too many great songs to list
Tiromancino- an alt-rock band with really great lyrics.
Listening to them and translating the songs has helped with my Italian a lot.
I have also liked to listen to old 70's music, I'll post some links in a minute to a few really good ones.

This is quite unlike Joe Purdy, Josh Ritter.... it's 70's Italian disco- but fun! This song is hilarious as is the video. It is called A far l'amore comincia tu (to make love, your move first) There is one line so funny- "and if he takes you to an empty (cold) bed, give him back emptiness Make him see this is not a game, make him understand what you want" www.youtube.com/watch?v=rPAAoSFfFwwAnd this song is from the 70's (or maybe 60's) and the words are a little cheesy, but I love her voice and the mood of the song. Next time I do karaoke I am going to sing this! I tried to convince Katy to cover it but she said it was "too Italian" www.youtube.com/watch?v=PIml7-ivxgoTu mi fai girar You make me spin tu mi fai girar you make me spin come fossi una bambola like I were a doll poi mi butti giù then you throw me away poi mi butti giù then you throw me away come fossi una bambola like I were a doll Non ti accorgi quando piango You never realize when I'm crying quando sono triste e stanca tu when I'm sad and tired pensi solo per te You only think of yourself No ragazzo no No, boy, no No ragazzo no No, boy, no del mio amore non ridere don't make fun of my love non ci gioco più I'm done playing quando giochi tu when you're playing sai far male da piangere you know how to hurt me to tears Da stasera la mia vita From this night on, my life nelle mani di un ragazzo no, in the hands of a boy, no non la lascerò più I won't leave. (The whole phrase should be: From this night on I won't leave my life in the hands of a boy) No ragazzo no No, boy, no tu non mi metterai you won't put me tra le dieci bambole among the ten dolls che non ti piacciono più that you don't like anymore oh no, oh no Tu mi fai girar, you make me spin tu mi fai girar... you make me spin... poi mi butti giù, then you throw me away poi mi butti giù..." then you throw me away...

And sorry, poppy and cheesy or not, I think it is difficult to not like this song and video. I like how his lyrics are always so rambling and random but still very sweet. He's a fascinating artist, he is, with so many various projects and collabarations. Believe it or not, but I've actually HEARD OF this Laura Marling. Yay for the old hag! Haven't had a listen, though. Yet.

I did listen to some songs and I agree they sound promising. More than anything I like the husky voice. Best of good health wishes for you, Karen.

There's a lot of nice rhythm in many Italian songs, I agree. Most of them are too smooth for my ears, if you know what I mean, arrangements and all. But sometimes that can be quite lovely, nevertheless. And it must be a nice way of learning the language better. Sending good thoughts, C - you brave woman you.

That's brill Karen. Can I hear Dandelion Wine anywhere other than MySpace? It just instantly crashes my computer.
You know this has been an unusually unmusical year for me, well, listening wise. I live the Josh Ritter too, liked the new Fionn Regan and the new Ryan Adams then got bored quickly of both. For the past few months I haven't really been listening to anything which is really unusual for me, I just haven't been excited about anything. I could do with some new recommendations. I've been writing a lot though.

I've been listening to Lykke Li a lot this year, and Dum Dum girls are a new discovery for me. I like the new Florence (have only listened to it via Spotify though -- haven't bought it yet), and also been using Spotify to listen to Bat For Lashes. Must be year of ladies for me.
Well, and Noel Gallagher's solo venture, of course. But you all knew that.
Still need to hear the new Ryan Adams. I have a friend here (also named Ryan) who covers Ryan Adams in his sets sometimes. I badgered him into playing "Let It Ride" once, it was great.

it's been a year of ladies for me too - new Kate Bush is always an event, and she released 2 albums this year!! a remix of some old songs, and a batch of new songs called 50 Words For Snow. I looove Lisa Hannigan's Passenger, that one continues to grow on me. Feist's Metals is excellent, and I really liked Thao and Mirah's collaborative album a lot also.
As far at the men go ... Beirut's Rip Tide is also very good. Out of the blue lately I've been liking Paul Simon - he's always been there in the background, but I've just realized how quietly good he is.
and how could I forget - Anne, remember aaages ago you recommended Ane Brun? Her new songs were featured on NPR radio here in the US, and sound fantastic, but apparently haven't yet been released in the US. Totally different from what I remember of her, but fantastic stuff.

Well, and Noel Gallagher's solo venture, of course. But you all knew that. Ooooh...me too. I'd listen to anything of his, same as you. I haven't really needed anything to "help me get through the year", thank goodness - it's been a decent one for me. My taste in music has always been pretty different than most of you guys (I think). This year I have been completely obsessed with The Black Keys. Between "Rubber Factory", "Thickfreakness", and the new one "El Camino", I barely listen to anyone else. I always listen to a little Cake and Kings of Leon, depending on my mood. I started listening to my guilty pleasure, Blink 182 again. My daughter goes to school with Travis Barker's daughter, and Travis gave me their new album to listen too. It's...er...not too horrible. It made me want to listen to their old stuff, though, which brought back fond memories. When my daughter wants to listen to music with me, she prefers pre-1967 Rolling Stones. She's very particular. She also likes Cake, so I let her listen to certain songs of theirs. Last week she was switching through radio stations on the way to school and came upon the new Rihanna song "We Found Love". I've always been so proud of Samantha's taste in music, but no more. She's obsessed with that damn song. Every time she hears it she goes on and on about how she loves it and NEEDS to see Rihanna in concert. I want to kneel down in front of her, take her cute little cheeks gently in my hands and say, "oh sweetie, Rihanna is a skanky whore - you'll never see her in concert." Lord help me!

I reviewed quitea lot of stuff earlier this year, but it's hard to get excited about anything. The Middle East are quite good though, Australian band. I tried to get my hands on stuff that I knew was good, so Patrick Wolf's album was quite brilliant, as expected, and Bon Iver of course. I really haven't listened to much that wasn't work I keep coming back to Counting Crows, my big musical love. and the tried and tested stuff. I've been trying to educate Lizzy a bit, but she only wants Dolly Parton She did play around with the CD player a bit when we first brought the boy home, so his first song ever was Any Day Now by Elbow, which is an AWESOME first song to listen to in your life.

My brother's little son Leo who is 18 months old loves Abba and The Kinks and likes handbags and was obsessed with my shiny red shoes when I was over.
There's a picture of him wearing a pink poncho playing a toy saxaphone which makes me laugh every time I see it. Definitely one he will not enjoy being stuck in the family album when he's in his teens.
