Jawdroppingly brilliant. Lol talking to the Irish nurse, best TV scene I have seen in many years. So moving. Catch it on 4OD if you've missed it.

Was coming on to post about this actually. Thought it was fantastic. The whole cast were brilliant actually. Both funny and tragic and they capture that period in time so well.
I liked that the film was more about Shaun but the series focused more on Lol, the way it really is her story and she carries it so well but the other stories intertwine with it. And yes the exchange between Lol and the nurse, was bawling at that bit.
Are they doing a This Is England '90?

Well I read somewhere that they are. You know that nurse, she is not a real actress, she is a nurse that Shane Meadows met in Ireland and that is her first acting job! She was amazing. And I loved that they killed off the cliche about nurses being cold hearted bitches. Especially Irish nurses.

That's funny because I thought she was going to be a cold hearted bitch as well (we're obviously watching the same tv series'/films)
I'm trying to remember where I got that film stereotype from, but I was expecting that portrayal too.

I missed this thread.
Did you really think it was that great? I loved the previous one and pretty much everything Shane Meadows has ever touched in the past, but I thought this was pretty poor to be honest. No real storylines, that 'improvisation' thing he does with the cast usually works really well but in this it was almost cringe-worthy it was just too obvious. I thought the last series just about managed to stay away from being too cloying because it was so well balanced - sentimental, shocking, fast-paced, violent, tender, etc etc. This was just very sentimental and shocking for all the wrong reasons. The abuse storyline with Lol was SO heavy-handed, I thought it was handled really really badly. All the stuff with Woody was implausible and at times very badly acted. The worst bits though was the storyline with Smell and... forget his name... the young lad. Just awful. Meandering, pointless, nothing got resolved... Too many of the scenes were over-long, drawn-out, over-acted. It felt like Meadows had rushed it, no attention to the plot or the script or where it was going.
The scenes with the Irish nurse might've been brilliant if the rest of what was going on wasn't so mawkish. Didn't work for me at all.
Horses for courses I suppose. I hope the next one's better.

I thought it was done really well, that seems to be his overall style though, not a tightly constructed plot but places more emphasis on characters.
I thought the Lol storyline was handled really well that sort of quietly imploding thing while no one else is really aware. The flashback in the hospital was brilliant too.

I didn't believe the whole Woody story I have to say, it was WIERD, and yes some of the scenes were long (the one where Lol visited Combo in prison was long and I was cringing a bit the way they kept smiling at each other and not saying anything, and the scene where Lol was in the church I thought would never end, and there was a slight sense of "is anything going to happen?" in places, like I was dying to find out more (you know that feeling when there is only a few minutes left in something and it's the last episode and you just want them to squeeze as much into it as possible - but ALL of that being said I still really really enjoyed it. Just typed loads then realised it's a total spoiler. OK: thrilled with the way one story ended up and gutted about another. Is that vague enough I wonder?
I have to say the Lol PND thing was the most realistic thing I've ever seen on telly.

Ah no I haven't seen that. It annoys me that I can't get RTE on Sky.
Would definitely also make the football commentary a lot better!

Wonder if you can get it online anywhere, it's definitely worth a watch, series 1 was only a 4 parter and I watched it all in one go on Skyplus, then series 2 came back and it was about 100 times better, GRIPPING, and they've left it open for a new series too, one of the actors was interviewed on Tom Dunne this morning and I think they are expecting to have a third series. It's left a big hole in my Sunday nights I can tell you The only tiny thing I can complain about is that some of the skanger Dublin accents were a bit moody, you know when you get posh actors or non-Dubs (yes yes I typed culchies, then changed it to boggers, then decided to go with non-Dubs ) trying to do a skanger Dublin accent and you keep hearing things that sound wrong (e.g. pronouncing the word "HEARD" as "HURD" instead of "HERD") drives me scatty.

What did people think of Black Mirror?? The Entire History Of You was the best one I thought, the National Anthem one was good but so gross yuk, and the other one about the people having to cycle exercise bikes to get credits was wierd and I fell asleep before the end. I did love the Entire History of You though that was very good, watched it last night.
Is there anything good on over the Christmas?? I have Ella's school concert this afternoon, The Night Before Christmas. Bless!

finally manged to get around to downloading both series and the original film. I have meant to watch them on several occasions but somehow been diverted, so I'm gonna make sure I get through them (right after I've watched all the Sherlocks I downloaded yesterday )
