Yeah! That would be good!
It's really weird sometimes I actually enjoy it but some days it is absolute fucking shite. I know that's pretty much standard but the role I had previously was a bit more....well...pleasant.
basically I'm working in a department where there are some right egos and primadonnas and it takes a bit of getting used to.
One bloke last week bawled me out because his PA had asked me to cover her phone as she had to leave early. So she forwarded on her phone to me as was agreed and one call came through which I answered, took the message and as I was putting the phone down the bloke marched up to me and started shouting "I have missed two calls! This is ridiculous" and I said calmly "well I've been sitting here all afternoon and only one has come through but if you'd rather I can come and sit at your PAs desk if you think that might help" and he just carried on ranting and raving "I don't care if you sit in Alaska as long as the phones are answered!!" and I said again "I will come and sit at your PAs desk, it is not a problem" and he stomped off, ranting and raving.
Now this was in front of the new team I've taken over and the entire office. I'm sorry you can say whatever you like about people who are under pressure there is no need to be as out of order as that. I've worked for some grumpy arseholes in my time so it isn't like I'm not used to it but that's just fucking wrong. Sort out with your PA how you want your cover done and if you need someone to sit at her desk while she's away, fucking ask her to set it up. Knob.
Anyway, seems to go like that at the moment, lovely people, arseholes, lovely people, arseholes.
Then yesterday I'm covering for someone who is off and everyone around me is great craic, all joking and laughing and chatting and banter about football.
All a bit schizo.
But yes Hen your ass kicking powers would be welcome!
Bah.

Kez that grumpy areshole just made a fool of himself in front of everyone! I'm sure it reflects badly on him and not on you for allegedly missing two of his calls! Just be grateful you're not his PA all the time! That reminds me of something similar that happened to me on a temp ass-ignment. This one girl had to leave early so I had to cover her bosses phones. He was so anal, he demanded I write the message down and. Leave him a voice mail and email the persons name and phone # to him, and I guess I didn't hand him the handwritten note fast enough because when I brought it into his office, he stomped bis feet and started screaming GOD. DAMMIT! Over and over again, I just turned and walked out of his office. my guys were so nice. They wanted me to go perm there but that's when I interviewed with Guinness and got that temp job, it lasted a year and paid a lot more - $26 bucks an hour! Which was insane at the time (1999) but I got it without an agency that's why it paid so well. Come to think of it $26 an hour would be insane to get right now too! I haven't made that much in a long time!

So I had an interview on Wednesday. It is for the company which used to be the delivery arm of the company I worked for. Know their systems inside out etc, and they actually got in touch with three of us to see if interested in a job, very similar to that which we had been doing for the past knows how many years. They are 'creating' the Ops Bridge team from nothing after bringing operations back in house after a disasterous outsourcing a couple of years back. They have even nicked the shift pattern that we used to do, so want 5 teams of 2 people, and 1 floating as cover. All sounds good so far eh? Here's the kicker. The pay is £25k. No shift allowance. So, they want me to go and pull them out the shit, and for the priviledge, they want to pay me roughly 55% of what I was earning in the same role before. The HR woman promised she would be getting back to us by today at the latest. The other two are both taking it I think. One is desperate for a job, the other has a driving job he loves, but it doesn't pay as much. Personally, I'm going to tell her what they can do with the position. There isn't even free parking down at the Albert Dock were they are based. All in all, I'd rather keep my options open for now.

I think you're right Dave. Always go with your gut feeling I reckon. Sometimes it pays in the long run to hold out a bit longer. Good luck with it

Sorry to rant but have been near tears about 5 times this morning, culminating in my receiving an email from the head of department which had stated that I would have to be in the office at 7.15am one morning to receive some new employees. No one had asked me or said anything about it. Bearing in mind that my seizures are triggered by tiredness and the fact that I would have to get up at 5am to be able to just about make a connecting train to get me in here for 7am, I was fucking livid.
All this was after my office manager basically on my case because although she has fobbed off a lot of her work on to me the last week or so, I've been left to type up an office manual, completely restructure it only for her to tear it apart each time (because I didn't get some of the names of people in the department right - well I have only been here 6 fucking weeks!)
At the moment I'm covering for 3 different people which means one other team, my own team, and 3 senior department members, plus other people asking me for other stuff like travel. Have spent all morning stressing, have a splitting headache and my office manager getting really shitty with me because this document isn't done and her boss is screaming for it. My phone has not stopped ringing all morning and I just feel like throwing the fucking thing out the window. Just sat there letting it ring a minute ago and everyone was looking at me like "why the fuck aren't you answering it" and I knew who it was and what he wanted but it was something I'm waiting for someone else to do who hasn't done it!
I really want to leave....

Went to bed at 9pm last night and got up and took my sweet time getting in today and feel much better for it Managed to talk to one of the girls here who was brilliant and she said give it a week and if things don't change say something because otherwise if it goes to 6 weeks down the line and I'm miserable and stressed the Office Manager will say "well why didn't you say something??" Basically it's about trying to approach it in a constructive way I think. Just saying "if my role could be a bit more clearly defined, that would be great" rather than "chuck everything at Kerry cos I can't do it" I've had 2 tasks she's given me which were waaaaaaaaay over my head. I thought I'd done a decent job but when I had my meeting with her she would tear them apart, saying "why didn't you put that in there and that person is the head of so and so why are they not listed?" and I'm thinking "because I don't know who they are!! I'm NEW!". The thing is she is an absolute perfectionist (which is fair enough as that is probably why she is Office Manager) and quite controlling about things but she has worked here for 13 years, I've been here 6 weeks. On one hand you want to be enthusiastic and give everything a go and I have done that from the absolute beginning. Everything they've asked me to do (covering the head of department in my second week, staying late to cover another senior person who is very particular, taking on extra tasks over my usual work, covering people who ring in sick at the last minute, covering the office manager when she's late because she's "eaten too much rich food" (quote, unquote) ) I've said "of course!" because I want to prove that I am good at my job. It's when people take avdantage of that that pisses me off. I was trained in, quite laughably, by the girl whose contract they were terminating because she wasn't doing a good enough job. Eventually I had to go to another PA and ask if she had 5 mintues to go through things with me because I had been told a couple of times that I was doing things wrong (well duuuuh!) She was great though and went through it with me and now, funnily enough, I'm doing it correctly! The Office Manager did tell the guy who said I should come in at 7.15am that under no circumstances could I do that, not even as a one off so that gives me a bit of hope!

Think the other PA got it spot on Kez. Point out to the fuckwit next time that you are actually....new to the office. How the hell would you know who all the heads of depts are? And then tell her next time eats too much food, just get over it and get her arse in!

Well the interview went well enough. There is 1 position open now, but a second in a slightly different team is coming up so would be considered for that too. Have to just sit and wait now...
