I must see that, I love Colin Farrell. Comes across as a really nice bloke.
Dearling's Cusakphobia just made me laugh. Sorry dearling. I really like him, he's very Dustin Hoffman isn't he? Agreed with High Fidelity, both book and film are great.
Can't wait for the film of The Road. That should be good.

loved In Bruges. Very funny film. And Marg, there already is a sequel to Trainspotting, although it hasn't been made into a film. It's called Porno. Guess what it's about?

Zodiac was great I thought. You really have to pay attention though cos things get a bit muddled in the middle. Well I thought so anyway. Mark Ruffalo is brilliant in it. And the attention to detail is amazing. Love it when they really get it right with a film.

Ah yeah Robert Downey Jr is great in this too. He always injects that great well needed humour into any part he plays.

I'm sure there's gonna be a few people arguing that point now. i was really looking forward to it as well have you seen 'the lives of others' karo? i have this to watch over the coming days also, along with zodiac (everythings five quid in hmv) The Lives of Others is so excellent. Try to also watch it again with the director's commentary on. He speaks English. It is so interesting. You know, they are re-making it in English (I think with the same director). Seems dumb to me, everyone I know loved it just as it is. Oh well. The main actor died after they won an Oscar but at least he got to be there for the accolades. He had cancer. Finally I saw Happy-Go-Lucky, it was really nice - I liked it. Except for the friggin old people who don't seem to realize they are not at home and other people in the crowded theater do not want to hear them making noise coming in late and talking throughout the movie. So I see this movie about being happy despite the daily stress and stuff then i come home to find a g-damn parking ticket on my car. At the train station we're supposed to have commuter parking permits during the day but nights & weekends = free. I got there at 2.45 pm so i took a chance. Never got one before there. Growl.

LOVED loved loved The Lives of Others. Karo didn't want to watch it as it was a little close to home, in subject matter and she didn't feel she could sympathise with the main character (which is kind of essential, I think). I remember posting about it when I saw it at the flicks and we had a discussion about it then. I just thought it was a beautiful, beautiful movie.
In Bruges - bloody brilliant. Possibly the best movie I saw last year and I must get it out on DVD for another watch. I really enjoyed Farrell in it but thought Brendan Gleeson was better and Ralph Fiennes was just hilarious.

Brendan Gleeson is the unsung hero in this isn't he. He doesn't get all the best lines but he holds it all together really. The bit when they play Raglan Road and he's struggling up the stairs in the tower was beautifully acted. You're not sure what the fuck he's doing but you feel every excrutiatingly painful movement he makes. Did anyone ever see the short film that Martin McDonagh directed called Six Shooter that Brendan Gleeson was in as well? Same kind of dark tragic humour in that film, very good as well.

Thanks Liz, saved me a bit of typing and defending myself There is a bit of a discussion going on in Germany at the moment about how there are worrying amounts of literature/movies out concentrating on the human aspects of both Stasi and Nazis. Some are arguing that it seems to be very easy to lose sight of the inhumanity of both. But then we are all educated people who can take in both sides...

Hey, no need to feel you have to defend yourself anyway Karo . It's easy for those that have lived (figuratively or otherwise) a world away from situations/regimes to have a rose-coloured view of movies like this. I thought it was a beautiful and moving film but, I'm sure, if I lived under the conditions imposed by the Stasi, had family/friends that did, or was even well versed on what they did, for that matter (which I'm really not), regardless of connection to people that suffered under the regime, I wouldn't want to watch the film either.
